In June, KIPP Atlanta students and families, teachers, alumni, and staff gathered together for a peaceful protest at our KIPP STRIVE Campus. Our Team and Family protested and demanded justice for Black lives. We know this is just the beginning and we must keep up this momentum because there’s still so much crucial work that needs to be done.
If you were unable to join the protest, below are some of the powerful words chanted aloud by our community:
“Black girl magic, Black boy joy!”
“No justice, no peace!”
“Stop the violence, stop the hate!”
“Is it enough? Not enough!”
“Reclaim our streets!”
“Say it loud! I’m Black and I’m proud!”
“Black lives matter!”
The voices of our students, families, alumni, and staff rang out through the streets surrounding our KIPP STRIVE campus. It was inspiring, motivating, a celebration of Blackness, and a call for justice for all Black lives. Our community made signs, wore their Black Lives Matter shirts, and our KIPP Atlanta Collegiate band, Sounds of Royalty, blessed the protest with their powerful sounds and energy. There were also passionate speeches by our little and big KIPPsters, alumni, and staff, and 8 minutes and 46 seconds of silence for George Floyd and the countless Black lives that have been lost.
So what’s next for KIPP Atlanta Schools in the fight for social justice? It starts with us continuing to connect with our community about how we envision KIPP Atlanta Schools moving forward together, building a more just world for our students. We are committed to this more than ever and it will take our entire community to evoke the change we need.
